Republicans are ready to approve Texas a new law tightening voting bans in America’s second-largest state, in the party’s latest aggressive move to limit ballot access throughout nasud.
The new Texas law will prevent voting, entry and voting on Sunday – a reflection of the voting curbs introduced by other Republican -controlled states including Florida and Georgia this year.
It will also make it easier for defeated candidates to contest the election results through the courts – like former U.S. president Donald Trump who did not intend to do so in the 2020 election against Joe Biden.
The Texas law was approved by the Lone Star state Senate early Sunday after a tense evening debate among Texas Democrats who strongly opposed the law. It is expected to be approved by the lower house of the Texas legislature later Sunday, before it is signed by Greg Abbott, the Republican governor who supports the bill.
On Saturday, Biden released a shocking statement saying Texas law attacked America’s “sacred right to vote”.
“It’s part of an attack on democracy that we’ve always seen this year – and it’s always not equally targeted at Black and Brown Americans,” the U.S. president said. “It’s wrong and not American. In the 21st century, we need to make it easier, not harder, for everyone to be eligible to vote, “he added.
Jaime Harrison, chairman of the National Democratic Committee, called it “Jim Crow 2.0, simple and straightforward” in a tweet.
Democrats in Congress are trying to counter the Republican drive to impose new voting curbs by passing federal-level legislation that would ban certain restrictions and guarantee ballot access. But as the law passed the House, it was stopped by the Senate, where the Democratic majority was not large enough to avoid Republican opposition and exceed the threshold of 60 votes out of 100 needed to improve the law.
Voting bans passed Georgia Earlier this year caused a rift between Republicans and corporate America, where many large companies were under pressure from employees and the public to openly oppose legislation that limits people’s ability to do so. -balota.
Tensions came primarily in turmoil due to the support of many Republican lawmakers for Trump’s effort to reverse the Outcome of the 2020 election. But Texas law shows that Republican lawmakers are betting that their traditional allies in the business community can’t clean up the party because they still support most of their policy goals including low taxes and light regulation.
Texas’s voting law has been introduced as the traditionally deeply conservative state that is slowly shifting to the left, with Democrats also achieving victory in statewide contests and forcing Republicans to defend their advantage there.
While Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by a nine -point margin in 2016, he defeated Biden by six points in 2020. Texas is the second most delegated delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives and the second highest. count of college election voters in the presidential election. making it a significant reward for both parties.
As well as moving to pass aggressive curbs on voting access, Texas Republicans are also seeking to limit abortion rights as early as six weeks of pregnancy, while exempting gun laws to allow people to carry firearms with fewer checks
