The Digital Division won the three highest jury awards, a second place in Gold and five Audience Awards at the 2021 Shorty Awards for Social Media and Brands.
Al Jazeera won a record nine Shorty awards in a virtual launch of the winners that ended Friday night. The jury awarded three prizes to the Winner and a gold second place among brands that have shown excellence in digital innovation.
The English and Arabic teams for Al Jazeera’s Digital Division also moved five finalists to the jury for the Audience Honor awards, beating the competition from various finalists.
A prize for Winning the jury is given an honor for Best Instructional Video Start Here, the current series explains the events that bring viewers the deepest news of the season. The team also won a separate Audence Honor for this category, garnering more audience votes than finalists from other brands. Starting Here also won a third award – an Audience Award – in best use of the Facebook Video category.
Al Jazeera’s Emmy-selected VR and media innovation studio, Comparison of AJ, also emerged as a jury winner in the News & Media category for Living in the Unknown, the interactive site about Uighur Muslims living in exile. Living the Anonymous has won top prizes at other awards, including the 2021 Amnesty Media Awards and the 2020 Online Journalism Awards.

Initially for the network, Digital Newsroom scored three finalist nods, both of which were converted to Audience Honors for viral success covering world news for Arabic-speaking audiences. Digital Newsroom is digging into its loyal audience base of 26 million Facebook subscribers to come out with Audence Honor for the best Facebook Presence. And the team won the second Audience Award for Best News & Media for Ejaz (The Appearance)-the first daily Arabic “mobile-friendly” news product in the Middle East and North Africa.

Due to the pandemic, this 13th annual edition of the Shorty Awards announces winners on a rolling basis within four days of the arrival of their Instagram page. The short jurors also selected Al Jazeera English along with other drivers of social excellence for Brand of the Year. The main prize goes to social media behemoth Facebook as the ceremony draws to a close.
